At the Gilbert Historical Museum, we’re proud to continue a traditional American craft; the art of hand-quilting lives on in our
Home Life room.
Our group of quilting volunteers works on traditional wooden quilting frames to finish quilt tops that may never otherwise be completed. Their work benefits the museum financially, with proceeds from the completion of each quilt going to the museum. The group raises about $3,000 every year.
Do you have a quilt to finish?
The quilters can complete up to 26 quilts a year, and receive quilt covers and orders sent from all over the country. Their quilting service is extremely popular, and waiting times can be lengthy. But if you have a quilt top that you just don’t have the time or skills to finish, our volunteers will finish it for you at a price of just $6-a-foot. They make tiny stitches, fastening the quilt tops to inner batting and backing, to create beautiful bedspreads and wall hangings that are truly works of art.
If you’re interested in quilting, then our annual
Art of Quilting show is an absolute must-see!
Join our live quilting bee
If you’d like to join our volunteers in our quilting bee, we would love to have you. Anyone is welcome to come and join the group; whether you are an experienced needle worker, or an amateur who has never picked up a needle, the group will happily share their skills with you.
Just stop by and say hello to the ladies in the
Home Life room during your next visit to Gilbert Historical Museum; you’ll find them there regularly throughout the week, including most Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday mornings.
