Just like any other American town, and just as we do today, early Gilbert residents had to make a living.
In the Occupations Exhibit you’ll discover Gilbert’s deep roots in agriculture. Did you know that Gilbert was once known as the Alfalfa Hay Shipping Capital of the World? A mix of rich soil, good irrigation and hard work was a successful combination for Gilbert’s early residents. Alfalfa, Cotton and Dairy farms were vital to the success of the town in the early 20th Century.
As with any agricultural based community, a number of professions and business sprouted up to support Gilbert farmers in their work. As you wander around the Occupations Room in the Gilbert Museum you’ll see a depiction of a Blacksmith’s workshop and a Doctor’s office, along with many other fascinating items that highlight the variety of Gilbert jobs from years gone by.
As the Gilbert community grew and the town services increased, so did the variety of professions. Retail stores, auto garages, a pharmacy and a post office soon offered employment to local workers.
